Liposuction

Liposuction (lipoplasty or “fat modeling”) is a technique that has been around for many years. The practice started in Europe and eventually made its way in the United States as a common practice in the early 1980s.

Since then, the practice and techniques have changed to give the patient more choices. Now a patient can have more fat cells removed with less discomfort and blood loss during the procedure.

A good candidate for this procedure is someone who is in normal physical shape and has pockets of fat around certain sections of their body. They have attempted several times to tone certain sections of their body with proper diet and exercise with no success.

Someone who may have other health problems may not be a good candidate for liposuction.

For example, a person who has developed type 2 diabetes in later adult hood may not be a prime candidate for this procedure. Please ask you doctor when visiting at your free consultation.

Benefits

The benefits of liposuction are two fold: They are a great way to give you that boost in self esteem and mental confidence you need to push yourself further.

Also, it creates a perception that your workout routine is getting you in the right direction.

And more than likely your work out routine is getting you in the right direction, but a sudden loss of a few pounds in a certain area of your body can quickly create that added boost you need.

And your friends and family will notice a big difference as well in your physique and attitude about life in general.

Costs

As with most other cosmetic surgical procedures pricing is based on a few scenarios: 1. What geographical location you live. Assuming you are having the procedure done in the same city that you live. 2. The overall experience of the plastic surgeon.

A surgeon who has done these liposuction procedures many times may have a higher price, but that comes with a lot of experience as well.

Also, you will want to verify that the surgeon is board certified. If you find a surgeon who has a lower price tag this may be a good indicator that you found a doctor who is not board certified.

Risks

There can be a few risks associated with liposuction. Please consult your surgeon on the risks to determine if you are more prone to a certain risk over another.  Common risks include:

General anesthesia
Perforation of internal organs around site of liposuction
Complications from medication associated with surgery
Blood clot within the lungs
Pooling of blood under the skin layer
General swelling and bruising of the surgical site

One item to note is the use of local anesthesia to general anesthesia. Ask you surgeon if local anesthesia can be used over general anesthesia.

If you have a choice, local anesthesia is known to have less risk than going totally under with general anesthesia.

Moreover, talk with your plastic surgeon about not doing too much fatty tissue removal in one surgery. There are a lot more risks involved when attempting to remove too much tissue at once.

Experts say it can be tempting to have all the fat removed in one procedure, but veteran surgeons say to go back and have a little removed within 3-4 sessions if at all possible.

Techniques

There are many techniques in the liposuction process. Depending on what type of liposuction procedure you are having there may be a special procedure.

With technology today there are approximately 12+ different procedures you can choose from for your operation. Please consult your physician on which type your prefer and see if that procedure can be used for your specific situation.

There is one technique that is not utilized any longer (dry technique). This procedure was stopped due to the excessive amounts of blood loss that occurred during the operation. Moreover, the surgeons did not inject anesthesia into the tissue before removal.
